But after a split second of hesitation, Mira choked out, "Call the ambulance."
She realized that the advanced life-support equipment at the hospital, combined with their specialized treatments, might be the only chance they had.
After giving the order, Mira lowered her head and continued meticulously adjusting the needles to balance Eleanor's fading pulse.
But a faint, brittle voice drifted to her ears. "Don't waste your energy... don't send me to the hospital. I just want to pass away peacefully, right here at home."
Mira bit her lip hard, but a suffocating lump formed in her throat. "Grandma, we... we'll go to the hospital. With all our treatments combined... you'll recover quickly. Just stay with me... for a few more years?"
Eleanor stubbornly shook her head. "I know... I know you can't bear it... but everyone dies eventually. I don't want to leave this world covered in tubes, surrounded by beeping machines. Needles, tests, endless torment...
If buying a few more days... means suffering through all of that... I'd rather not..."
Mira's tears finally broke free, streaming down her face. Eleanor was right; her body was truly giving out. If not for the painstaking care from Mira and Master Ellis, she would have passed away a year ago.
Mira clenched her jaw and looked up at Owen. "She has a point. If we take her to the hospital, it'll just be prolonged suffering. It's better if we..."
Owen looked at Mira's tear-streaked face, then at the dying woman on the couch. He let out a heavy sigh. "We should respect her wishes. The trauma of the ambulance ride might just make her pass sooner anyway."
Right then, Master Ellis hurried through the door.
He immediately checked Eleanor's vitals and examined her condition. After a tense moment, he looked at Mira and slowly shook his head, signaling that it was over. There was no need to put her through any more pain.
"Mira, try not to despair. We've done everything humanly possible.
For her to be able to pass peacefully, without agony, is a blessing in itself."
Mira knew the logic, but the agonizing reality that her grandmother was leaving her was entirely unbearable.
