Too Late to Hold Me Back novel Chapter 1217

"But what was that stunt your mother pulled?" Mira asked. "At the time, she was screaming about wanting you to inherit your father's estate."

"That was her idea, not mine," Julian replied. "I tried talking her out of it for hours that day. She agreed on the surface, but then went ahead and did it anyway."

"So, do you plan to settle here in Mavaria, or go back to Javenaire?"

"Originally, I was just going to ask my father for some money and head back overseas. But after being here a while, I realized the cost of living is much lower. So, I want to try making a life here. Honestly, I've been busy job-hunting these past few days."

"What did you do for a living back in Javenaire?"

"I was a middle school teacher."

Mira and Owen exchanged a glance. It was a decent profession, and so far, they hadn't caught him in a single lie.

"Do you have a teaching license?"

"Yes."

"What subject did you teach?" Mira asked.

"Mavarian literature and language. As an expat, I had a natural advantage."

"Could you teach Javenairean English to students here?"

"Absolutely."

"If you're serious about staying, I can introduce you to an educational institution, for your father's sake. Since you grew up in Javenaire, your accent is perfect. You'd be very popular with the local kids. You'd probably need to pass the local certification exams, though."

"Are you struggling financially right now?" Mira asked.

"Yes. After buying the plane tickets to get here, we had almost nothing left. I've been scraping by doing some private tutoring for elementary kids. Otherwise, we wouldn't even be able to afford food or a place to sleep."

"Do you need a loan?" Mira pressed, testing him further.

"Could you spot me a couple of thousand dollars? I need to rent a small apartment. Staying in a motel is just too expensive, even the cheapest basement rooms in Aethelgard add up. I swear, I'll pay you back as soon as I get my first paycheck."

The fact that Julian offered to repay her showed he still had some sense of responsibility.

"How much are your monthly debt payments?"

"Converted to Mavarian Dollars, about twelve hundred."
