"Even if I don't say it, you already have a suspect in mind, don't you?" Mira asked, looking softly at her grandmother.
"It wasn't Sebastian. I raised him. I know exactly who he is. He might be weak-willed and let his wife and kids walk all over him, but he isn't evil enough to murder his own mother," Eleanor sighed, her voice frail but steady.
"It wasn't Miles either. I know he brought the tonic, but he wouldn't poison me.
I just transferred the company into his name. I only came back to the Quinn estate to support him. Unless he lost his mind completely, why would he hurt me? Especially when it means having blood on his hands.
That only leaves..."
"You're right, Grandma. It was her," Mira confirmed, following Eleanor's train of thought.
"Who? Gwen is locked up in a psychiatric ward, isn't she?" Lacey interjected, confused.
"Seraphina," Mira answered plainly.
"Sera? But she's pregnant." Lacey looked utterly stunned.
"What does being pregnant have to do with anything? If she refuses to build good karma for her unborn child, there's nothing anyone can do about it," Mira said, purposefully aiming the words at Lacey. Because of her pregnancy, no matter how severe Seraphina's crimes were, she would serve her sentence outside of a cell. Even for attempted murder.
Mira wanted to make sure that when Seraphina walked free, she wouldn't manipulate Lacey into doing anything stupid.
"That is pure evil. Poisoning her own grandmother!" Julian blurted out in disgust.
He immediately turned to Lacey. "Mom, you cut ties with her right now."
"I will. I haven't spoken to her in a long time anyway. When she gets out, I won't have anything to do with her."
"That is incredibly vicious. Two birds with one stone," Julian muttered, shaken.
After visiting Eleanor, Ethan and the others flew back that same night. They all had their own obligations, and hovering around the hospital wouldn't help anyone.
Mira, Jax, Silas, and Lacey stayed behind to watch over the old woman. They rotated in two-hour shifts. It wasn't physically exhausting, but Mira insisted on staying close in case Eleanor's condition took a sudden, critical turn.
There were certain medical emergencies that only she and Master Ellis were equipped to handle.
Early the next morning, Miles and Sebastian were officially cleared and released. Seraphina remained in custody.
The moment he walked out of the precinct, Miles rushed straight to the hospital. He collapsed crying by Eleanor's bed the second he saw her. Wiping at his face, he choked out, "Grandma, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I let someone swap the tonic right under my nose."
"It's alright. A thief can scheme for a thousand days, but no one can stay on guard for a thousand days. Who could have ever predicted she was so dead set on ending my life?"
