Mira's home was close by, just a short walk away, so Owen rarely picked her up from campus.
"You were taking so long, I thought something might have happened. I came to help you assert your dominance."
"Please, who needs you to assert dominance? Most of the people at the school are my fans now."
"Are you saying you don't want me to pick you up?"
"Alright, alright, I'd love it. You can pick me up whenever you're free."
Mira was an incredibly independent woman. She wasn't fond of overly clingy, joined-at-the-hip romance dynamics.
Owen was a steady, grounding presence for her, and she preferred a dynamic built on mutual respect and partnership.
That evening, while Mira and Owen were in the study, Miles Quinn called again.
"Mira, did you register at Aethelgard University today?"
"Yes, today was registration day. Is something the matter?"
"Sera was sentenced to a year in prison, but she's serving it outside due to her pregnancy."
Grandma Eleanor had reminded him to consult Mira whenever issues arose, noting it would save him from making mistakes. Miles was genuinely trying to build a proper rapport with Mira.
"What about Luna? Has she been sentenced yet?"
No matter what she said, as long as Mira didn't treat him the way she treated his parents, he was fine with it.
"Because she testified against Sera and Vivienne Voss, she was only given three months of detention."
"And Vivienne and Lawrence? Have they been sentenced?"
"Vivienne was sentenced to five years in prison for directly conspiring with the Syndicate.
Lawrence committed a major felony, so his case hasn't closed yet. His parents are trying everything to raise money and pull strings to reduce his sentence."
Pausing for a moment, Miles added, "Sera is pregnant. She refuses to terminate the pregnancy, and she absolutely refuses to divorce Lawrence. She's fighting it tooth and nail.
This was the first time recently that Mira had called Miles by his name with a tone of familial acknowledgment, signaling her approval.
"How do you plan to handle your mother?"
"Right now, I have people watching her around the clock. She's not allowed to take a single step out of her room. But this isn't a long-term solution.
Mira, do you have any ideas?"
"If you can harden your heart, send her to a psychiatric facility. They have professionals to keep an eye on her there.
Don't worry, she won't be locked up for too long. Once Lawrence is completely ruined, her tantrums will be pointless. If she stabilizes emotionally by then, she can be released.
Of course, this is merely a suggestion. How you proceed is entirely up to you."
Mira actually possessed a specialized compound—similar to the one used on Owen's grandfather. But it was a closely guarded secret from Master Ellis, and she wouldn't use it unless absolutely necessary.
Besides, Gwen didn't deserve such a painless, mind-numbing escape. Why should she get to live in blissful ignorance?
