"Oh, hush. I'm just an old woman. If I can't help you kids out with the big things, I can at least do this much."
Mira took two cups, noticing the glass was slightly warm—Eleanor's signature touch, as she always insisted that drinking ice-cold beverages was bad for the stomach.
If Rachel had made it, it would have been icy and refreshing.
Mira handed a cup to Owen and downed the remaining one in a single gulp.
It was faintly sweet with a subtle, earthy finish, likely from a touch of rock sugar and roasted seeds.
"Eleanor, Rachel, make sure you both have some too."
"She already poured us each a cup the moment it was ready. We're well taken care of here, you don't need to worry about us,"
Rachel replied.
Eleanor gave Mira a gentle look. "I saved some for your mentor, too. He should be back any minute."
Over dinner, her mentor looked up from his plate. "Did Richard cause a scene with you two today?"
"How did you know?"
Mira asked, looking at the old man in surprise.
"It's all over the front page. How could I not know?"
He turned his gaze to Owen. "Did you leak something else? The internet is absolutely losing its mind right now.
There's an angry mob surrounding Jocelyn's house. Haven't you seen it?"
Mira and Owen exchanged a glance. "We haven't looked at our phones since we walked through the door."
Pulling her phone from her pocket, Mira began scrolling through the headlines. "Owen dropped the evidence proving his stepmother murdered his biological mother."
Her mentor shook his head. "Jocelyn is public enemy number one right now. If she even dares to step outside, a mob will tear her apart for being a homewrecking mistress.
Not only did she steal the husband, but she murdered the rightful wife. It's the ultimate trigger for public fury.
Now her precious son is locked up, staring down a death sentence, and she just got hit with this massive scandal. I'd say she'll never know a day of peace again."
A short while later, Liora Bennett called. "Mira, was Owen's mother really murdered by his stepmother?"
"That is so frustrating! That wicked old hag deserves to rot! How does she even have the nerve to beg you for help?!"
Afterward, several other classmates and friends called, all echoing Liora's absolute disgust. This was exactly the outcome Mira and Owen wanted.
The angrier the public became, the more suffocating life would be for Jocelyn and Richard.
After dinner, just as Mira and Owen headed into the study to work, Miles Quinn called.
"Mira, what do you think is going to happen to Lawrence?"
"What do you think is going to happen to him?"
Mira countered.
"He's probably finished.
But Sera refuses to divorce him. My parents are badgering me every single day, trying to get me to throw money at securing her bail. And now they're hounding me to pay off Lawrence's legal fees too."
"And what are you going to do about it?"
