Rachel genuinely hoped her son would take the permanent cooking job at Mira's estate.
Despite their recent friction, he was her flesh and blood, and a mother never stopped worrying.
Mira had only allowed Daisy to stay and rest out of her deep respect for Rachel.
"Sounds like a plan.
When Daisy has the baby and you want to go take care of her, just let me know."
Rachel thought about it. "It's probably better to hire a professional maternity nurse. They know what they're doing, and I might not do as good a job."
Despite her words, Mira knew Rachel wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the estate unattended.
"It's fine, Rachel. You can go if you want, and come back once Daisy is fully recovered."
...
Meanwhile, Owen Lance stood in his executive office, locked in a tense standoff with his father and stepmother.
"Owen, don't push things to the absolute brink. Kicking your own brother out of the company—aren't you afraid of karma?"
Richard Lance pointed a trembling finger at Owen and roared.
Lawrence's reputation was completely shattered; with his criminal record, no decent corporation would ever touch him, and former associates avoided him like the plague.
Richard and Jocelyn had capitalized on Owen's absence to shamelessly bribe board members and threaten executives, barely managing to squeeze Lawrence into a corporate role.
Yet the very moment Owen returned, he ruthlessly booted his younger brother out the door, showing zero respect for his father's authority.
"I never thought I'd hear the word 'karma' spill from your lips. The irony is staggering.
If karma actually existed, would you and your mistress still be breathing?"
Owen's gaze turned predatory, his voice a chilling, unhurried drawl.
"What happened to your mother was a pure accident. We had nothing to do with it."
"Then go die. Why are you wailing in my office?"
Owen's tone remained utterly indifferent, not even bothering to lift his eyelids to look at her.
Jocelyn lunged dramatically toward a marble pillar, prompting Richard and Lawrence to desperately haul her back.
"Mom, I'm so sorry. I'm a failure of a son for letting you suffer this humiliation.
Let's go. I won't work here. This empire doesn't belong to us anymore; he wants to swallow it all himself!"
Lawrence cried in agonizing regret.
"Don't worry, Mom. Even if I have to beg on the streets, I won't let you go hungry."
His tone painted Owen as an absolute monster.
In reality, it was nothing but a manipulative performance. No matter how far a legacy family fell, they would never see the bottom of an empty wallet.
