Too Late to Hold Me Back novel Chapter 1064

The crowd's merciless commentary had continued. "Exactly. It's her money and her shares. She can give them to whoever she wants. The fact that she cut you out just proves what garbage relatives you are. How dare you accuse Miss Mercer of swindling her? Eleanor is sharp as a tack. She's not senile. No one could con her out of a dime."

"And her son-in-law, Lawrence, was arrested because his negligence caused a worker to be electrocuted to death! What does Owen Lance have to do with that? Even if Owen did put him behind bars, he did the world a massive favor."

Two elderly neighbors even walked right up to Gwen and her family, shaking their heads in utter disappointment. "You have to be decent human beings. If you go around pulling these vicious, malicious stunts, karma is going to ruin you."

The other elderly woman chimed in, "Ever since Eleanor left your house, the Quinn family's fortunes have been tanking. I strongly suggest you learn some respect for your elders if you ever want your luck to turn around."

"Throwing a tantrum out here won't fix anything. People are just laughing at you. If you really cared about her, you'd be at home making her a warm meal instead of screaming in the street."

Hearing the relentless backlash, Gwen had lost her mind. "Shut up! All of you, shut up!"

But the louder she screamed, the more aggressively the crowd tore into her.

"Look at her! Completely unhinged. Gwen Quinn really is a piece of trash."

"I heard she's a college professor. She must have bought her degree. I bet she fakes that refined academic persona on campus."

"What kind of students could a psycho like her possibly teach? The university should fire her."

"Shut your mouths and get the hell out of here!" Gwen had shrieked.

"We aren't standing on your property, so why should we leave? You're the ones who need to get the hell out. Coming here to scream at the crack of dawn—what a lunatic!"

...

"Who told you that? Where did they go?" Gwen's head had snapped up.

"Rumor has it they went on a vacation overseas. I haven't been able to find out which country yet."

Realizing her protest had failed catastrophically, Gwen had finally listened to her son and gotten into his car. All the way home, she relentlessly pestered him, "Find out exactly where Mira is hiding. Immediately."

The truth was, Lord Leonard Lance and Jocelyn had orchestrated that entire public stunt. They had been trying desperately to bail Lawrence out, but every attempt had hit a brick wall.

They had decided to weaponize the Quinn family to publicly pressure Owen into relenting. Unfortunately for them, they had no idea Owen and Mira had already left Mavaria.

"The second time they showed up to riot was about a week after you left," Rachel continued. "They were screaming, demanding to know where you went, and throwing around insane accusations about you colluding with terrorists. We knew it was all lies, so we completely ignored them and let them make fools of themselves at the gate. Later on, your friend Jillian Lowe dropped by. She mentioned that Leonard and Jocelyn were pulling every string they had and throwing millions of dollars around to get Lawrence out on bail.
