As soon as Winona pulled up to her aunt's salon, she heard an older woman's hysterical screaming. Frowning, she stepped out of the car and realized the woman squatting by the entrance was Cynthia Sutton—Matteo Slater's mother, Helena's former mother-in-law.

"Helena, you heartless bitch!" Cynthia shrieked at the top of her lungs. "My son was your husband! When you divorced, he left with nothing! He gave you the house and the money! Now that he's been in a terrible accident, you're just going to abandon him? If you won't take care of him, Greta has to come back to the Slater family! She has to serve her father and provide for him!"

Unembarrassed, Helena stood her ground in front of the growing crowd of neighbors. She let out a cold laugh. "Let me tell you all how shameless this family is. When I was young and stupid, I married into the Slater family without asking for a dime. After I gave birth to my daughter, this woman and her son treated me like garbage because I had a girl. I snapped and got into a fight with her, almost went to jail to protect myself, and he teamed up with his mistress to try and destroy my life.

"I fought tooth and nail in court, won the divorce, and made sure that piece of trash left with nothing. Did I do anything wrong? My mother and I raised Greta completely on our own. The Slaters never lifted a finger. And now they have the nerve to come here and demand my daughter take care of him? Greta is a child!
