The Setup 

MARY’S POV: 

I stood in the warm light of the kitchen and saw Marl give his phone a completely speechless look. 

His facial expression was settled somewhere right between amused laughter and total disbelief, his dark eyebrows raised high up on his forehead, his lips pressed tightly together in a thin, straight line. He just stared down at his phone screen as if the device had somehow told him something completely absurd, something so crazy that he could not even process it properly in his head. The soft green glow of the lit screen cast subtle shadows across his sharp features, making him look almost mischievous in the room. 

I looked at him with a puzzled expression and asked, “What happened over there? Was that your client speaking?” 

Marl slowly looked up at me, a strange, sharp glint dancing in his eyes. “That was my most difficult client of all, Alistair. It seems he has somehow managed to come up with another terrible idea, and I am genuinely afraid that I might have just accidentally handed him some direct inspiration for it.” 

He walked slowly around behind where I was standing, his footsteps making faint, light sounds against the clean tile floor. I could feel his broad presence hovering right behind my back, standing close enough to feel his body warmth but taking care not to touch me. His quiet voice dropped much lower, taking on a far more serious tone than before.
