Chapter 426 Marl’s Countermove
MARY’S POV:
“I have the power to do whatever I please,” he interrupted coldly, his face devoid of emotion. “And right now, I want you to go home and get some rest.”
He turned his back on me and began walking away down the bright corridor, his heavy leather shoes making slow, rhythmic sounds against the floor. The sound was calm and unhurried, like the movement of a powerful man who felt absolute certainty that he held every single winning card in his hand. Before I could even make a move to run after him, several tall men wearing dark suits stepped forward from the corner near the waiting area, their expressions hard, cold, and completely blank. They formed a tight physical wall right in front of me, completely blocking my path to the hallway exit.
“Mrs. Vane,” the largest bodyguard said, his voice flat, deep, and professional. “Please step this way and with us peacefully.”
I stared up at the four tall figures standing in front of me. They were all built like professional fighters, far larger and stronger than I could ever hope to be, and clearly trained to handle high–stress security situations. If I attempted to use physical force to push past them, I would easily be overpowered in seconds. If I started screaming for help at the top of my lungs, not a single person in the building would step in to save me. The hospital hallway was filled with passing staff and visitors, but every single one of them would simply assume I was a wealthy wife being escorted home by her husband’s security team, and they would quickly turn their heads away to mind their own business.
Despite knowing the terrible odds stacked against me, I decided to fight back anyway.
I raised both my hands and shoved hard against the massive chest of the bodyguard standing directly in front of me. He did not move a single inch backward. I tried to duck my shoulder and squeeze past his side, trying to dodge between their heavy arms, but the four men quickly closed their ranks together, forming an impenetrable human barrier. They crossed their thick arms over their chests, planted their heavy boots wide apart on the tiles, and kept their cold eyes locked onto my face.
