The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 421

The Internet Turns

MARY’S POV:

His large palm pressed gently against my upper shoulder. “You need to stay out here and take good care of yourself,” he said softly, his deep voice sounding private and quiet. “I will go inside and check on Hotch by myself. If you walk in there right now while the female nurses are helping him change out of his messy clothes, it is going to be far too awkward for him, and that certainly will not help his body recover any faster.”

Then Marl deliberately turned his head and raised his voice, making sure every single word was crystal clear for Alistair to hear.

“And make sure you pass a message along to the crazy person who ran Hotch down with his car. If you are planning to go inside that room to visit him, remember that you are there for a quick checkup, not a romantic date. Otherwise, he might get so furious that he decides to hit Hotch again… or maybe even try to run over the two of us at the same time.”

Alistair looked completely furious. His face went bright red, and his jaw clamped down so tight that the muscles twitched. He took a broad step forward, opening his mouth wide to defend himself, but then he suddenly stopped right in his tracks. His eyes darted nervously back and forth between me and Marl, his large hands opening and closing into tight fists at his sides.

He tried to step around Marl to reach me, his hand reaching straight out to grab hold of my arm. His long fingers were just an inch away from closing around my elbow, his touch feeling possessive, controlling, and far too familiar.

Before he could lay a finger on me, the young nurse stepped right between us.

Her body was quite small compared to his, but her firm stance was completely fearless. She held her right hand up high, physically blocking his path, her eyes looking hard and completely unyielding. Her blue uniform was neat, her posture was straight as a board, and her sharp expression said that she had dealt with plenty of aggressive, difficult men before and was not going to let anyone push her around inside her own hospital.

“Mrs. Vane,” the nurse said, turning her head around to look at me directly, “would you like me to call the local police department for you right now?”

Alistair’s face darkened instantly. “I am her legally wedded husband,” he snapped out, his voice rising in deep anger. “You have absolutely zero right to step in and-”

The nurse cut him off without a second of hesitation, her tone dropping into a freezing cold state. “That may be true, sir, but your pregnant mistress just attempted to murder your lawful wife out in the street. The entire story is currently spreading all over the internet! There is no way I am going to stand here and let you drag this poor woman away against her will.”

She held her mobile phone up in the air, the bright screen shining brightly in the light of the hallway. The display was glowing, showing a massive, bold headline that looked utterly devastating. She turned the screen toward us so we could see the latest trending news story.

I stared straight at the bright screen, my mind completely spinning out of control.

Someone online had carefully gathered all the chaotic events from the past few hours into one single news story: Vesper’s fake video clip, the one where she pretended an intruder had broken into her house, had caused thousands of her worried and angry fans to search through every single frame of the footage looking for clues to report to the police. Her followers had been thoroughly convinced that Vesper was in mortal danger, believing that some dangerous criminal was trying to hurt her. The comment sections had been completely flooded with

messages of deep worry, intense outrage, and loud demands for justice.

However, internet investigators had quickly discovered that the vehicle had actually crashed into someone else entirely, and that the lavish property shown in the video was not even Vesper’s home. The geographic location had been traced by users, and the real estate ownership records had been checked. It was actually my house. Alistair’s private estate. The very house where I had been living quietly with my little daughter.

Some of her foolish fans tried to argue online that Alistair’s house was basically Vesper’s house anyway, claiming that the two of them were practically married already and that she had every right to be on the property. But then another video clip, one that had been scrubbed off the internet hours ago, was suddenly reuploaded by anonymous users. It was the exact video that revealed the dirty truth, the clip that Alistair had paid his corporate team huge sums of money to delete forever. It showed Vesper sitting in the hospital hallway, the unexpected pregnancy test result, and the explosive argument that followed.
