The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 419

Vesper’s Fake Injury

MARY’S POV

The sudden shout echoed loudly through the quiet hospital corridor, sharp, furious, and full of total rage

“What the hell do you two think you are doing?”

I turned my head around instantly.

Alistair was standing right at the far end of the hallway, his face flushed bright red with pure anger and his dark eyes blazing with fury. He was carrying Vesper tightly in his arms, holding her body cradled against his chest as if she were some kind of fragile, precious treasure that needed to be protected from the world. Her arms were wrapped tightly around his neck, her face buried deep into his shoulder, completely hiding her expression from view. She looked small and helpless in his arms, the perfect picture of a weak, vulnerable woman in distress.

Right behind them, a young hospital nurse was walking fast to keep up, her face completely flushed with frustration. Her blue uniform scrubs were rumpled, her messy hair was falling out of its tight bun, and her breath was coming out in short, exasperated gasps. She looked as though she had been standing there arguing with the two of them for a long time, completely fed up with their ridiculous behavior.

“Sir,” the nurse called out, her voice sounding extremely strained and exhausted, “we have already explained to you three times now that your female friend does not need to be admitted to the emergency room. She is not seriously injured at all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with her foot or her ankle. She is completely fine.”

Vesper’s head snapped up in an instant. Her dark eyes blazed with intense anger, her upper lip curling back into a nasty snarl. The fake mask of sweet vulnerability slipped off her face for a brief second, showing the cold, nasty woman underneath.

“That is complete nonsense!” she snapped back, her voice sounding high, sharp, and full of venom. “My foot is in absolute agony right now! What kind of useless, incompetent medical staff are you people anyway? You need to run those tests on me again right this second, Ah!”

Without giving her any warning, Alistair suddenly dropped Vesper down onto a nearby empty hospital bed, making her jump in surprise. She bounced hard against the thin mattress, her eyes opening wide with shock and her mouth hanging open in total protest. The sudden, rough movement had caught her completely off guard, leaving her body sitting awkwardly on the hard white bed.

Alistair did not even bother to turn around and look at her.

His dark eyes were fixed completely on me.

Wearing an incredibly terrifying expression on his face, he began walking toward us, his heavy shoes making loud, deliberate stepping sounds on the clean floor tiles. His sharp gaze kept shifting back and forth between me and Marl, his jaw locked tight and his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. He looked exactly like a desperate man who was barely holding onto his self-control, looking as though he were just one single word away from completely exploding in a rage. The harsh overhead lights cast

long, dark shadows across his pale face, making the lines around his eyes look twice as deep as usual.

Marl did not panic or flinch at Alistair’s sudden appearance.

He simply stood up from his plastic chair in a very calm manner, his movements unhurried and his face completely unreadable. He reached out his right hand and placed it firmly on my shoulder, pressing down gently to keep me sitting safely in my seat. His touch felt steady and full of reassurance, sending a silent message telling me to stay right where I was. I could feel the comfortable warmth of his palm right through the fabric of my shirt.

He turned his body around and faced the furious man without a single trace of fear.

“Before you open your mouth to say something completely ridiculous,” Marl said, his deep voice remaining remarkably low, slow, and steady, “you should really take a moment to think carefully about what I told you back at the house. Try using your actual brain to process this situation for once in your life, instead of letting your stupid desires do the thinking for you.”

Alistair sneered back at him, his lips twisting into a mean, nasty smile. “Oh really? And how exactly am I supposed to think in this situation? My legally married wife just invited another strange man into our private family home! And then the two of you-”
