Left Behind

ALISTAIR’S POV:

Was not Marl supposed to be my loyal friend? Was he not just a small-time local lawyer who had only gotten rich and successful because I handed him big corporate cases? The guy who loved throwing massive drinking parties and spent all his free time flattering rich women? I had practically built his career for him. I had handed him endless financial opportunities. I had trusted him with my deep secrets.

And now he was holding me up in the air by my shirt like I was a piece of garbage.

Marl swung his arm and threw me down onto the driveway.

A sharp, awful pain shot straight through my entire body, making it feel like every single bone in my spine had just broken into pieces. My back hit the hard gravel driveway with a loud thud, the sharp little stones digging right through my thin shirt and deep into my skin. All the air was instantly forced out of my chest, and I lay there flat on my back, gasping wildly for breath, completely unable to move my arms or legs. The dark night sky spun around above my head, the tiny white stars blurring together into long circles of light.

Feeling completely dazed and broken, I heard Marl bark down at me with absolute disgust.

“Try using your brain for once in your life!”

He instantly turned his back on me and spoke to Mary without using a single bit of polite language.

“Get out of the way right now. Are you trying to take this man to the emergency room or not? Do you even know the quickest road to the main hospital from here? Do you even have a valid driver license on you right now? Or are you just trying to waste more of his precious time?”

The very next second, both of them hopped into my car and sped out of the driveway, completely ignoring me as I lay bleeding on the ground.

I just lay there on the gravel, staring up at the pitch black sky, my whole body throbbing with pain while my head spun out of control. The stars above looked tiny and faint, hidden behind the gray cloud cover. The freezing night air bit hard against my face, raising big goosebumps all along my bare arms. The sharp gravel stones felt like knives pushing into my back.

Marl had completely turned his back on me. My long-time friend, my trusted ally, the one person I had counted on to fix my problems, he had thrown me away like trash.

And he had done it all for her.

He had done it for Mary.

Vesper came limping over to me very slowly from the side of the house. Her face looked completely pale, her dark eyes were full of big tears, and her mouth was twisted into a look of deep pain. She walked with a terrible limp, holding one leg stiff, while her right hand was pressed hard against her side. Her expensive dress was dirty and torn, her dark hair was a messy ball of knots, and her black eye makeup was running down her cheeks in long, dark streaks.

“Alistair,” she whimpered out loud, her soft voice trembling violently in the cold air. “She grabbed my arm and threw me right out onto the hard street. I am pretty sure I just ripped my medical stitches open inside. It hurts so terribly much.”

She dropped down onto her knees right next to my head, her shaking hand reaching out to touch my upper arm. Her fingers felt like ice cubes pressing against my warm skin.

“I desperately need to go to the hospital right now too.”
