A Son Will Fix Everything 

ALISTAIR’S POV: 

I thought about the question she had asked me earlier. About the divorce. About whether I had anything to say. 

Had she really cheated on me? 

The thought was unbearable. The thought of her with someone else, her hands on another man’s skin, her laughter filling another man’s ears which made my blood run cold. 

I would never allow that to happen. 

I still believed she loved me. I had to believe it. She had loved me for so long, had given me everything, had built her whole life around me. She simply couldn’t accept Vesper’s presence yet. Maybe she was confused. Maybe she was lashing out. Maybe another man had taken advantage of that confusion. 

But she still loved me. She had to. 

How could I make her stay? 

My mind wandered back to when she had been pregnant with Elowen. She had been so happy. Every day she clung to me, talked excitedly about the future we would build together. She had been radiant, glowing, full of hope and love and the certainty that everything would work out. 

We had already picked out names for both a daughter and a son. 

If we had another baby… 

A son… 

Would she become the woman she used to be? 

I pushed open the bathroom door. 

She was standing at the sink, her hands gripping the edge of the counter, her reflection staring back at her in the mirror. She looked up at me in surprise when I walked in. 

I pressed my lips to her hair. “Let’s have another baby,” I said again. “A son. We always talked about having a son. Remember? We already picked out the name.” 

She didn’t answer. 

I tightened my arms around her. “I know things have been complicated. I know I’ve made mistakes. I’ve done things I shouldn’t have done. I’ve hurt you in ways I can’t undu.” The words came out in a rush, surprising me But I love you. I never stopped loving you. And I want us to be a family again. A real family. You, me, Elowen, and a son. A son would fix everything.” 

Still, she said nothing. 

“Mary,” I whispered. “Please. Say something.” 

She didn’t answer. 

“Let’s have another baby,” he said softly.
