My Daughter’s Birthday
Open Marriage: His Regret, My Revenge
My husband brought his mistress home, and he told me to take care of her.
The man I had been married to for seven years didn’t just cheat on me. When our daughter was about to celebrate her birthday, he broke his promise to our daughter, swore he’d be back for her birthday, but never showed. He was with his mistress, and the whole world knew about it. Countless reporters captured me in a state of shock and tears, looking utterly disheveled under the flashing cameras.
I didn’t know how to explain it to my daughter. I could only pretend everything was fine, and confront him in private, asking why.
Then he had the nerve to say it was all my fault. He said I was no longer focused on him only. He said I didn’t understand how much pressure he was under at work. He asked why I couldn’t be like other wives and simply not care about such small things.
To him, marrying me was charity. He never took a single word I said seriously- not even when I told him I wanted a divorce.
And he wanted me to tell everyone that I was the one who suggested an open marriage.
Since that’s what he wanted, I’ll give him exactly that. But when that day finally came, he regretted it…
Chapter 1
Mary’s POV:
The candles had already melted into sad little wax puddles by the time I realized he wasn’t coming.
I stood there in the kitchen, my palms pressed flat against the counter, staring at the cake like it might sprout legs and walk itself to the trash. Seven years of birthdays. Seven years of me decorating these cakes myself because Alistair always forgot to order one, and I never wanted our daughter to wake up to nothing. This year, I had let myself hope he might remember on his own. He didn’t. I made the cake at two in the morning while he slept in our bed without once stirring to ask why the oven was on.
Some habits die hard. Hoping, I mean. Not the baking. The baking I’m actually quite good at.
No messages. No missed calls. Just a read receipt from three hours ago on the text I had sent: Elowen’s party starts at 4. Please don’t be late.
Three hours. He had seen it. He had chosen to ignore it.
That was the thing about Alistair. He never yelled. Never hit. Never did anything that would let me point at a single moment and say there, that’s where it became unbearable. Instead, he just… faded, slowly, like a photograph left in the sun. At first, I told myself he was busy. The company needed him. Deals fell through. Important people needed important dinners. I was his wife-wasn’t it my job to be understanding?
But understanding became a door I kept opening wider until one day I realized I was standing outside my own marriage, shivering in the cold, and he hadn’t even noticed I’d left the room.
