What Her Faith Created
HANNAH’S POV:
The asset question was settled two weeks later.
Seventy percent to Adele. My mother’s sister. The woman who had held that folder for thirty years and had lost her sister and thought she lost me too until my husband had searched for her and brought us together.
Thirty percent to me.
My lawyer said I was entitled to the full amount. Elijah sat beside me and said carefully that he just wanted to make sure I had thought it through. I said I had thought about nothing else for two weeks. I said I have my company and my husband and my children and everything I built with my own hands. Adele spent thirty years as the guardian of everything my mother was owed. She deserves more than I do.
Elijah looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, “Okay.” And that was the end of the conversation.
When I told Adele she was quiet for a long time.
Then she said, “Thank you much Hannah.” A pause. “You are so like her.”
I pressed my hand over my mouth for a moment.
“She would have been proud,” I said.
“Every single ordinary and extraordinary day of all of it,” Adele said.
Three weeks after the verdict, on a Tuesday morning that started exactly like every other Tuesday morning, I woke up and something was different.
I lay there for a moment. The bedroom was quiet and Elijah was still asleep.
My body had a quality to it I recognized in the way you recognize something you have felt before and not recently enough to place immediately.
I got up very quietly and went to the bathroom and stood at the sink and looked at my reflection for a moment and I thought: oh.
Lucas called that same afternoon.
“The press release went out this morning,” he said. “The full story of the verdict and everything” A pause.” Hannah. It is everywhere. I mean everywhere. Almoat seventeen countries already. The fashion press is calling it the most significant intellectual property decision in the industry in a generation.” His voice had the quality iu got when he was trying to stay professional and failing. “And,” he added, with the satisfaction of a man who had been waiting to say this for a long time, “I added other things too.”
“Tell me what you added,” I said.
He cleared his throat. “I added that Mirada Kensington’s legacy demanded has finally arrived and it is not as a distant hope but as a documented and legally binding conclusion, a talent measured not in years but in decades, and it serves as a reckoning not just for one powerful man but for every industry that has looked away from the women who built it. I am proud of it.”
“Lucas,” I said.
“Yes.”
“I love you.
He was quiet for a moment. “I love you too,” he said. “Now go celebrate. You have earned it.”
