Making Space 

HANNAH’S POV: 

We were home by six fifteen. 

The four of us in the kitchen, the twins were still in their competition clothes because neither of them had changed yet and I had not pushed it because there was something I wanted to preserve about the day for a little longer.

“She ascended,” I said. “She wrote a monologue and she performed it and the adjudicator said she had rarely seen that level of original writing at this age.” 

Cherry made a sound of joy. “Tell her,” Cherry said, “that my daughter Mirada is going to know that story when she is old enough.” 

I pressed my hand to my mouth. 

“Tell her yourself,” I said. “I t eighteen years.”

“I like being made to actually think,” he said. “The prepared answers are fine. But they are not interesting. The ones that make me think on the spot are interesting.”

“I am going to put it next to Grandma Mirada’s photograph,” she said to Andrew. 

Andrew looked at her. “Why?” 

“Because I wrote the piece thinking about her,” Amelia said. “It felt right that the thing I won for is near her.” 

Andrew was quiet for a moment. Then he said, “Can I put mine there too?” 

Amelia turned to look at him. This was clearly not something she had expected.
