The Same Saturday
HANNAH’S POV:
A Few Months Later…
A letter arrived.
Two letters, actually, which arrived on the same day in the same post. One was addressed to the parents of Andrew Martinez and the other to the parents of Amelia Martinez and they both had the school crest at the top with the formal font the school used when they were being official about something.
I opened them at the kitchen island while Elijah was making tea and read them both and sat very still for a moment.
“What?” he said, reading my face.
“Andrew has been selected for the Regional Schools Science Fair,” I said. “The category is Life Sciences. It is in three weeks. Full day event, judging starts at ten, parents are invited to attend the afternoon showcase.”
“That is wonderful,” he said. “And the other one?”
“Amelia has been selected to represent the school in the Citywide Junior Drama Festival,” I said. “Solo performance category. It is also in three weeks.” I looked at him. “Same Saturday.”
He put the teapot down.
“Same Saturday,” he said.
“Same Saturday,” I confirmed.
We looked at each other over the kitchen island for a moment in the way two parents who are doing rapid calculations about how to be in two places at the same time and arriving at the same answer, which is that they cannot.
“I will take Andrew,” he said.
“I was going to say the same thing,” I said.
We looked at each other again.
“Who goes where?” I said.
“Science fair,” he said.
“Drama festival,” I said.
“We are going to have to tell them,” he said.
“Yes,” I said. “And we are going to have to tell them carefully because they are both going to have feelings about it.
She pressed her lips together to contain what her face was doing, which was not entirely successful, and then said with great composure, “I am going to need more rehearsal time.”
“You can have whatever time you need,” I said.
“And new shoes,” she said.
“Let’s talk about the shoes,” I said.
“Black shoes with the strap,” she said. “I have seen them. I know the shop. I can show you the website.”
This was when Andrew said, very mildly, “Are you asking for shoes before anyone has confirmed the schedule. conflict?”
Amelia turned to look at her brother. “What schedule conflict?”
Andrew turned to look at us.
“The events are on the same day,” Elijah said. “Both of them. Same Saturday. Which means your mother and I are going to split up for the day. One of us will be at the science fair whike the other one will be at the drama festival.”
A pause.
