The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 277

A Child in the Room

HANNAH’S POV:

He called me from the board meeting when it was over. I was in the warehouse and I stepped outside to take it and I stood in the loading area where I had spoken to Dara and he said, “It went well. Prentiss used the word integrity and I think he meant it.” I said good. He said, “Are you working?” I said yes. He said, “Of course you are.” There was warmth in his voice when he said it.

“Go back to work,” he said. “I will get the twins. We will have dinner at home.”

“Normal dinner?” I said.

“Normal dinner,” he said. “Andrew requested the pasta thing and Amelia immediately said she also wanted the pasta thing even though last week she said she was tired of pasta.”

“Amelia reserves the right to change her mind,” I said.

“She has informed me of this,” he said. “Several times. I have accepted it as a household policy.” A pause. “I love you.”

“I know,” I said. “I love you too. See you at home.”

Sam was five years old and he had the type of face that was entirely comfortable in the world, open and curious and not remotely intimidated by a room full of adults he had never met. He had his father’s laugh, Martin had told us, and within about four minutes of arriving he gave it to us and I understood immediately what Martin meant because it was the type of laugh that takes over a room and makes everyone in it feel included.

He walked around the warehouse with huge eyes and a running commentary. He asked Sandra what she was making and she explained with more patience than she typically deployed for adult visitors, pointing out the seam and the fabric and the shape it was going to become. He asked Lily if he could touch the finished piece on the rail and she said yes very carefully and he touched it with one finger and then looked at her and said it is very soft.

“It is supposed to be,” Lily said, with the expression of someone who found this completely accurate and very appreciated

Lucas watched all of this with the look of a man who was still getting used to having this in his life and was very much enjoying the process of getting used to it.
