The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 27

Blindsided

HANNAH’S POV:

I couldn’t risk it, and the way they were procreated was enough reason to not bring him into their lives. He didn’t deserve them, and my babies didn’t deserve a wretched spoiled drunk as a father.

Soon my assistant called me, reminding me of an important meeting that couldn’t be rescheduled, so I dashed out after ensuring the kids were in their rooms, comfortably napping.

Lucky children…I can’t remember the last time I napped. I laughed at my thought.

I arrived at the office and I was there throughout the rest of the day, working and reviewing a bunch of documents, and avoiding any interaction with both Maya and Lucas though Maya was just as surprised as I was.

“I’m leaving now. And girl, I’m totally sorry. I had no idea Elijah was going to be there today and it was his/ company. I should have been more thorough.” Maya apologized, stepping into my office and I nodded at her.

“It’s alright. Have a nice night.” I smiled at her and she embraced me warmly before exiting out my office.

Soon I was done as well, so I rose to my feet and carried my bag, and just then Lucas walked in. 1

“Come on, let’s go home.” He said and I paused realizing my driver had gone on another errand. I huffed and got in the car with him:

The city lights blurred against the tinted windows of the car as we drove home. I stared out in silence, my chest rising and falling with each shaky breath I forced myself to take. Lucas sat beside me, his hand resting on his knee, fingers tapping restlessly. Neither of us spoke the entire ride.

By the time we got back to the house, the silence had turned suffocating.

I walked in, tossing my bag on the couch and kicking off my heels with more force than necessary. Lucas shut the door behind him, his jaw tight.

“You’re not going to say anything?” I asked finally, spinning to face him. My voice cracked, sharper than I intended.

He loosened his tie but didn’t answer right away. Instead, he sank into one of the armchairs, looking at me like I was some wild storm he couldn’t control.

“You should have told me.” My voice shook, but I held his gaze. “You knew, Lucas. You knew Elijah was going to be there, and you didn’t say a damn word. Do you have any idea how humiliating that was?”

I let out a shaky laugh, half broken, half furious. “You are unbelievable. You kept this from me because you didn’t trust me. Because in your mind, I’d crumble. Because I’m still the weak little Hannah you had to rescue.”

“That’s not fair.” His voice cracked for the first time. “I was trying to protect you.” 1

“Protect me?” I stepped back, shaking my head. “No, Lucas. You weren’t protecting me. You were protecting your deal. Your company. Yourself. You don’t get to dress that up as loyalty.”

We stared at each other, the weight of everything unsaid filling the space between us. He opened his mouth and closed it right back as if trying to find the right words but couldn’t.

Finally, I whispered, “You betrayed me today and I didn’t think you’d ever do that to me…”

He flinched like I’d slapped him, but I couldn’t take it back. The words hung in the air, heavier than either of us could carry.

And for the first time in years, I turned my back on him and walked to my room, shutting the door hard enough to rattle the walls.
