HANNAH’S POV:
She shook her head very slightly, though she was not disagreeing exactly. More like trying to settle something that still had not fully settled. “I had been tracking it for weeks,” she said. “My little notes. I had dates, I had what was said in specific meetings, I had approximate windows for when the leaks had to have happened. I was actually getting somewhere with it. I could feel the shape of it.” She looked at her coffee cup. “And then that message arrived on a Sunday evening when I was sitting in my flat and I had been planning to come to you on the Monday morning with everything I had found and instead I sat there for about four hours reading the message over and over and then I packed a bag.”
“A Sunday evening,” I said.
“Yes.”
“Timing,” I said quietly, mostly to myself. Whoever sent it had known she was close to bringing something forward. They had moved first on purpose.
Maya looked at me. “You are thinking the timing was deliberate.”
“Yes,” I said. “Someone knew you were getting close. The message was not just a threat. It was to stop you before you got to Monday.”
She was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, “Which means someone in that building knew what I was doing.”
“Yes,” I said.
“Which means the same person who was feeding the information was also watching me investigate it.”
“Yes.”
She absorbed that. “That is actually worse,” she said.
“Yes,” I agreed. “It is.”
I handed the phone back.
“Whoever sent this had your personal number,” I said. “And had access to private financial information about your family. Both of those things require a source that is not just close to the company but very close to you, someone inside.”
Maya nodded. She had clearly been sitting with this conclusion for a long time. “I kept coming back to that,” she said. “Who had that number and who could have accessed that kind of information about me. And I kept arriving at the same name and not wanting to believe it because I liked her. I genuinely liked her and I trusted her.”
I waited.
“Dara,” she said. The name sat in the quiet of the warehouse. “One of the junior production coordinators. She joined us about eight months before the fire. She was good at her job and was so friendly. She always seemed interested in what everyone was working on, she is the type of person who asked good questions and remembered the answers.” Maya set the cup down. “I gave her my personal number myself. She said she wanted to be able to reach me urgently outside office hours and it seemed completely reasonable. I never thought twice about it.”
I sat with the name.
