ELIJAH’S POV:

“A connecting service that came in from Frerus,” Kojo said. “Landing at ten fifty-eight that morning. Fifty minutes before the car was picked up.”

I said nothing for a moment.

“Elijah,” Kojo said carefully. “Is that significant?”

“Yes,” I said. “It is very significant. Do not share this with anyone else yet. I need to think.”

“Of course.”

I hung up and stood in the hallway with the phone in my hand and the sound of the twins still debating pencil case ownership drifting through from the kitchen and all I could think about was one word.

Frerus.

Hannah had lived in Frerus for seven years.

I want to be very clear about why I made that decision because it is not the kind of decision I make lightly and it was not made out of any from my wife. I had learned in the hardest possible ways what silence does myself and promised her that I would not be that man anymore. So I ne most creatively intense stretch she had been in since the collection was first when she came home from the warehouse the night before. Not just tired, though she alive in a particular way, the way she gets when something real is moving through her. The sketches newall were extraordinary. The team was responding to her. She had thirty days and she was using every hour of them

If I walked in right now and told her that the person who burned her building had come from Frerus, her mind would go to every person she had known there. Every interaction. Every relationship. And she would start pulling at that thread instead of the thread she needed to be pulling right now, which was the collection. The two things could not both be done at full strength at the same time and the collection had a deadline that did not move.

So I would carry this one for now. I would carry it carefully and I would not stop looking, and I would tell her everything the moment I had something more concrete than a flight connection from a city she used to live in.

That was my decision and I stand behind it. Hannah may disagree when she reads this. She usually does.
