HANNAH’S POV:

“They’re just honest,” I replied, and he smiled.

It was a small moment: A normal moment. And for a second, I felt like maybe I could be normal again too.

At night, Elijah would lie beside me, one arm draped over my waist, his thumb tracing slow circles on my skin like a silent reassurance that he was there. Sometimes I felt his breath hitch, like he was holding back words or fear.

“Hannah,” he whispered one night, voice low in the dark. “I’m here. Okay?”

“I know and thank you,” I murmured.

He would then kiss my forehead and tell me, “I love you.”

And I’d whisper it back. Because I did. God, I loved him so much it hurt. But loving him didn’t erase the grief. It just made it bearable.

“They wanted to talk to both of us,” he said quietly.

“There were accelerants found at multiple points in the building,” the officer explained. “The fire was intentionally set. Multiple ignition points. Whoever did this wanted to make sure the building burned completely.”

Something inside me cracked. Not loudly. Not all at once. It was quiet like glass splintering under pressure.

I let out a sound that might have been a laugh, might have been a sob. “You’re saying someone did this on purpose?”

“Yes.” He responded softly.

On purpose. That hurt so much that my chest burned and my vision blurred.

Lucas swore under his breath and I could feel the anger pumping through his veins, running a hand through his hair and he held my hand tightly. “Do you know who?”

“We’re still investigating,” the officer said. “Given Mrs. Martinez’s history and recent events, we are exploring all possible connections.”

Janet’s name screamed through my head even though no one said it but she was in jail. She had to be in jail. Unless
