Family Can Be Monsters 

HANNAH’S POV: 

Thankfully, the traffic was merciful that evening. I arrived at Elijah’s office building earlier than expected, the sky painted in soft hues of gold as the sun began to set. I pulled into the parking lot, stepping out with excitement already fluttering in my chest. 

My phone rang instantly. 

“Elijah, I’m already downstairs,” I said with a grin as I held the phone between my shoulder and ear. “Hurry up before I start complaining.” 

“I’m on my way,” his voice responded, slightly breathless. “The elevator’s slow.” 

“Always late,” I teased. 

“You love me anyway.” He kept saying this and I guess he was still giddy about the fact that I told him I loved him. 

“I do,” I admitted softly and in the sweetest possible way and he responded back, “I love you too, beautiful. I will see you soon.” 

I ended the call, still smiling, and turned toward my car to retrieve Amelia’s gift bag I had brought along and responded to Mrs Martinez who was asking to confirm the time since they were both excited to be attending their first show as grandparents. Their excitement was contagious and I was so glad that the kids’ imagination of having kind grandparents were being fulfilled but a part of me was still sad it wasn’t my parents. 

Just as I got out of the car to check if everything I needed was in the back seat, I had this uneasy feeling like I was being watched. I took him in my surroundings and just stood there and waited a bit so that when Elijah arrived I would just embrace him, and that was when everything shattered. 

Another voice laughed softly beside her. Janet. They lowered me into darkness, “Don’t shout at me.” Janet whined at me. 

“Sleep well now, Hannah,” Janet whispered with sick sweetness. 

My vision blurred, but just before the lid slammed shut, I saw them clearly, my mother standing beside Janet, both of them staring down at me. 

They had a bright satisfied smile and suddenly the trunk closed and everything went black. 

And that’s the last thing I remember.
