The Promise He Meant
3RD POV:
Cherry threw a handful of confetti at him. “We thought you’d like a little noise before you go back to being boring again!”
Martin appeared with a tray which had lasagna she had made for him while in the hospital and he asked for more, grinning. “I told them you’d be craving this more than anything.”
Elijah turned to Jacob, whose grin had turned smug. “You couldn’t have just told me?”
Jacob shrugged. “And ruin the surprise? Please. I do my best work when I’m dramatic.”
“And please don’t mind any single thing I said earlier. I love this new you, we all do and we are always ready to drop everything when he comes to you.” Jacob said and Elijah hugged him and appreciated.
Elijah chuckled and shook his head before walking toward Hannah. She looked radiant, her eyes shining under the porch lights, her hair loose, and her expression soft but full of emotion.
“You did this?” he asked quietly, stopping in front of her.
She smiled and nodded. “We all did. But… maybe I pushed a little.”
He looked around again, taking in the laughter, the decorations, the smell of delicious food and cake. “I don’t know what to say.”
“Then don’t say anything,” she said gently. “Just enjoy it.
For a few seconds, they just stared at each other. The noise around them faded. The world seemed to shrink until it was just the two of them.
He took a step closer. “You know, I think this might be the best welcome I’ve ever gotten.”
Hannah laughed softly. “You almost died, Elijah. We couldn’t exactly just hand you balloons and say ‘good job.’
He picked up the kids and although he groaned feeling pain, he loved the pain knowing he had this kind of life around him.
They all partied for a while, singing, dancing, clapping, and the kids played games, they ate and were merry until they had to go back to their house one after another.
At midnight, it was just Hannah and Elijah seated there and Elijah spoke looking into her eyes, “I know it was Janet responsible for what happened and I just want to assure you that she won’t get away with this.”
“Because if she does, who knows when next she will come back to hurt me or the kids or you again?” She added and Elijah held her hand caressing it softly with his thumb.
“I won’t let anything happen to you or the kids. Okay?” He said and she nodded.
Elijah then kissed the back of her hand and she smiled.
His heart was full but he definitely was constructing revenge plans to send as a warning to anyone who tried to mess with his family.
