HANNAH’S POV:
“I’m sorry,” he murmured, his voice cracking under the weight of it. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you were born or when you were little. I’m sorry I missed everything I should’ve been there for.”
I looked away, covering my mouth, because I couldn’t hold it together watching that moment unfold.
Amelia looked up at him, teary-eyed but smiling faintly. “You don’t have to be sorry, Daddy. You’re here now.”
That did it. The tears that had been threatening to spill finally broke free, streaming down my cheeks.
Elijah kissed the top of her head, his hand trembling as he did. “You have no idea how much I love you two,” he whispered, voice heavy with emotion. “You saved me without even knowing it.”
Cherry sniffled softly near the door, pretending to scroll on her phone to hide her face, while Lucas appeared behind her, quiet, just watching. There was something sacred about the silence that followed, like the air itself had gone still to make room for this moment.
I wiped my cheeks, laughing softly through tears. “You’re going to make everyone cry, Elijah.”
He looked over at me, smiling through his own wet eyes. “Wouldn’t be the first time,” he teased weakly.
The twins giggled, the sound so bright it filled the entire room. Amelia reached over and placed one of her small hands on mine, connecting us all. “Can we stay here, Mommy?” she asked softly.
I looked at Elijah, who gave a tiny nod. “Just for a bit,” I said, smoothing her hair.
The next few minutes felt timeless. They told him about their favorite cartoons, the pancakes Lucas had burnt that morning, how Andrew got scared of a butterfly, and how Amelia promised she’d become a doctor so no one would ever hurt him again. Elijah listened like every word was the most important thing in the world.
When the nurse came to check on him, the kids climbed down reluctantly, promising to visit again later as they were heading to their dance class.q Elijah’s hand lingered in the air long after they’d left, as if trying to hold onto their warmth a bit longer.
I sat down again, wiping my eyes, smiling despite myself. “You really scared us.”
He looked at me with that gentle, knowing smile. “Guess I needed a dramatic way to make an entrance back into their lives.”
I chuckled, shaking my head. “You’re unbelievable.”
And for the first time in twenty four hours, I let myself believe that maybe, just maybe, everything was going to be okay.
Just as I handed him a glass of water, he muttered to me, “Go home and freshen up, get something to eat and rest. I’m alright but it hurts me seeing my blood on your cloth. Martin or someone will be here soon.
I looked at skeptically for a second and walked towards the door seeing Cherry, Jacob and Lucas outside.
Jacob grinned from ear to ear when he saw him, “You scared the crap out of me. You really thought of leaving this earth before me. Broo…Hell no.”
We all laughed and I watched as Elijah turned to Lucas and said, “Please get her home safe and make sure she rests.”
Lucas saluted, “Yes sir!” I was about to leave but couldn’t, without giving him a kiss on the forehead.
“I will be back soon.” I assured him and let out a breath leaving.
