"I didn't realize you had a habit of stealing other people's boyfriends," Faye Ashworth snapped, her patience completely exhausted. She had intentionally picked a crowded spot to confront Juno Mercer.
She wanted everyone to see exactly what kind of person Juno was.
Claire Ashworth stepped forward, ready to fire back, but Juno raised a hand to stop her.
Juno looked down at Faye as if she were nothing more than a pesky fly.
It was honestly a miracle that someone with this level of intellect had managed to get into Northbridge University.
"What do you want?" Juno asked.
"Compete with me. If you lose, you stay the hell away from Shane Sherwood. You've already stolen so much from Rhiannon, and she's too soft-hearted to say anything. But as a bystander, I'm sick of it. Are you brave enough to take me on?"
Claire chimed in, "Faye has been doing this since she was a kid. She's a highly ranked competitive fencer. I've trained too, so let me fight her for you."
Before Juno could even respond, Faye sneered impatiently, "What are you, Juno's lapdog? Who told you to interrupt when I'm talking to her?"
The crowd frowned at her incredibly classless remark.
Juno pulled Claire aside. "Class starts in ten minutes. I'll have this wrapped up before then."
"Okay, I trust you." Claire couldn't help but add, "Beat her so hard her own father won't recognize her."
"Mm," Juno hummed.
The two girls went to the locker room to change, and the crowd of eager spectators swelled.
Several students pulled out their phones, ready to record. Ever since the basketball game, Juno had become something of a celebrity on campus.
Juno emerged wearing a sleek black fencing suit, holding a practice saber in her right hand. She looked absolutely, effortlessly badass. Even without a drop of makeup, her flawless features were breathtakingly radiant.
Her entire aura had undergone a massive shift from her usual laid-back demeanor.
Standing across from her, Faye suddenly felt a wave of inexplicable intimidation.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd.
"Who are you betting on?"
"Juno."
Most of the crowd answered in unison.
Someone nearby chimed in, "I heard Faye has been taking Fencing Class since she was a kid. She's practically a pro." He looked back at Juno's supporters. "Why are you all so sure Juno will win? Has she trained since childhood too?"
Bystander A: "No idea. I just believe in her."
Bystander B: "Gut feeling. She's got this."
