She spoke with easy nonchalance, but the agonizing heartbreak was unavoidable.

She didn't have many people in her life. Having poured her entire soul into caring for Mathis for three years, she had genuinely hoped to be treated with a little tenderness.

Unfortunately, they were simply from two different worlds.

Xanthe was furious. "When he was at death's door, you were the one by his side! Whenever that homewrecker came around to disgust you, anyone with half a brain would have ignored her! It's been three years; it should be your turn to enjoy a good life now!"

A tear slipped down Bianca's cheek. "I just wasn't born with the luck for a good life."

Her father had died when she was eight. His family had cursed them as jinxes, kicking her and her mother out onto the streets while seizing her father's business.

Her mother had tried to sue, draining all their savings, but never managed to win the company back.

Mabel was old and had a meager pension. Bianca had survived on scholarships and her mother's pitiful salary just to make it to college.
