"It's Fitch Sherwood."
Josiah closed his eyes, his bloodshot gaze fixed on the ceiling. His voice carried a numb, defeated weight.
"He's blacklisted me across the entire industry. With the Sherwoods giving the order, no one is going to hire me."
For a moment, Zadie didn't seem to process the words. She stood frozen. The teacup in her hand tilted, spilling scalding water onto her knuckles, but she didn't even flinch.
When it finally clicked, all the color drained from her face. Her eyes were wide with disbelief. "He... he's trying to starve us to death!"
"We never treated the Sherwoods poorly!"
"They grew up together! How can Fitch be so utterly heartless? He's not leaving us a single way out!"
The Sloan family's ruin was already set in stone, and Zadie knew that even if Josiah found a job, it would only be a drop in the bucket for their collapsed empire.
But Fitch’s ruthless determination to destroy them completely filled her with a new level of terror.
Suddenly, a thought struck her. She lunged toward her son like a drowning woman grabbing a lifeline. "What... what about Tamara?"
"Does Tamara know about this?"
"She's pregnant with a Sherwood baby! She can't just sit back and watch her own family get wiped out, right? Have... have you tried calling your sister? Ask her to talk some sense into Fitch!"
Surely, if Tamara begged him, Fitch would back off.
Josiah just listened quietly, a bitter, mocking smile twisting his lips.
He looked up at his mother, his eyes dead and cold.
"Call her?"
"Mom, are you still blind? Ever since we went bankrupt, Tamara has vanished off the face of the earth! She hasn't called, she hasn't texted, she hasn't asked if you and Dad are even alive!"
"She's perfectly comfortable playing the wealthy housewife over at the Sherwood estate. Do you really think she gives a damn about us?"
"With that kind of attitude, what do you think would happen if I shamelessly crawled to her and begged?"
