Why did they force him to live like this!
But Josiah and Zadie could never just let him die when there was a chance to save him.
Now recovering from the initial shock of their bankruptcy, Zadie had slipped right back into her arrogant persona. Sitting on the worn sofa, she barked orders at the new nurse as if she were still the reigning queen of the Sloan family.
On the television, a news anchor's perfectly modulated, emotionless voice filled the room. "...Sources report that the Langley Group has officially released a statement confirming the tragic passing of former CEO Callahan Langley and his fiancée, Leilani Sloan, in an accident in Northern Myanor..."
Zadie, who had been nitpicking the nurse's every move, stopped dead. Her eyes widened. She stared at the screen, re-reading the headline ticker to make sure she wasn't hallucinating.
"Is this a joke?"
Her first reaction wasn't immediate glee, but rather a complicated shock.
They always said the good die young and the wicked live forever. Did that wretched girl really just die?
Deep down, Zadie had secretly hoped Leilani would eventually soften and bail the Sloan family out. After all, no matter how bad things got, they were still her biological parents. Surely Leilani wouldn't leave them to rot.
But before Zadie could even reach out to beg, Leilani had been killed.
"Hackett... did you see that? Leilani is gone..."
"That ungrateful brat is dead..."
She turned to look at her husband.
