Despite his best efforts to sound perfectly composed, his voice betrayed the raw thrill of impending victory.
"Excellent! Absolutely excellent! I knew I found the right partner in you, Mr. Langley!"
"You name the time and place. I'll make myself available—no problem at all!"
"Perfect. It's a date, then. I'll have my assistant encrypt the details and email them to you tomorrow."
Talbot replied, keeping it professional. After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Talbot's tone suddenly dropped, taking on a probing, almost warning edge. "Fitch, regarding the Sloan Group shares... the risks are extremely high right now, and the implications are massive. Are you absolutely certain you want to take over at a time like this?"
It was both a warning and a subtle attempt to wash his hands of any fallout.
"Haha! You worry too much, Talbot!" Fitch let out a booming, arrogant laugh. "When has the business world ever offered a massive opportunity without a little risk?"
"Don't worry, I know exactly what I'm doing. And once the dust settles, your cut will be waiting for you. It'll only be more than promised, never less!" He reiterated his commitment, trying to soothe whatever cold feet Talbot might be having.
Hanging up, Fitch tossed his phone onto the desk. He couldn't contain his adrenaline anymore.
He shot up from his leather chair and began pacing frantically across the thick carpets of his study. His steps were quick and aggressive.
He had plotted for so long, enduring so much, and now, the final, crucial step to swallowing the Sloans whole was about to be taken!
He could already picture himself sitting behind the chairman's desk at the Sloan Group headquarters, basking in the terrified, reverent stares of the board.
The intoxicating rush of power went straight to his head, making him slightly dizzy.
In a euphoric mood, he suddenly remembered he hadn't checked in on his family in days—especially Milford, his son, who never seemed to get anything right.
Wanting to share his triumph—or rather, show off—Fitch picked up his phone and dialed Milford's number.
