It wasn't Fitch...
Then who could it be?
Hesitation veiled her for a moment. But ultimately, Tamara took a deep breath, swiped the answer button, and brought the phone to her ear. "Hello?" she said, her voice laced with uncertainty.
A brief silence met her on the other end, accompanied only by a faint static, as if the caller was also weighing his words. A few seconds later, a deep, slightly raspy male voice came through. The tone was deliberately gentle, almost cautious. "Tamara? It's me."
Those few simple words made her spine go rigidly straight.
It was him!
The mysterious man who had appeared not long ago, claiming to be her biological father!
Ever since that first phone call, he had vanished without a trace. Why was he suddenly calling again now?
Tamara's grip on her phone tightened, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her throat felt dry. She swallowed hard before finding her voice, unable to mask her tension. "Did... did you need something?"
Given how elusive this man was, and the fact that she hadn't met him in person, she maintained a healthy dose of skepticism despite his claims.
"Can't a father call his daughter just to check in?" A faint, amused chuckle filtered through the line, an attempt to lighten the mood. "I just wanted to let you know that my business here is almost wrapped up."
He paused, seemingly calculating the time, before giving a definitive timeline. "I should be back in the country in about three or four days."
Rationally, she should be thrilled that her biological father was returning. Judging by his demeanor, he was doing quite well for himself; his return could mean she'd have a powerful new backer.
Yet, an inexplicable, creeping sense of dread coiled in the pit of her stomach like invasive ivy.
Was there ever really such a thing as a free lunch?
This "father" who had appeared out of nowhere was a massive enigma in himself. This sudden "gift" didn't bring her an ounce of joy; instead, it only deepened her suspicion and wariness.
"Hmm." The man gave a meaningful, low laugh that echoed through the receiver, carrying a cryptic promise. "You'll see when the time comes."
