"I apologize to you, Celia," Alistair said, his tone grave and his expression entirely sincere. "I will have a new therapist sent over immediately."
The young woman's expression seemed to soften a fraction, though she still pushed her lips out in a petulant pout.
"You have way too many women after you. It's too stressful being around you."
The complaint slipped out far too naturally. It was framed as a niece griping at an elder, but to an unknowing observer, it sounded exactly like the intimate bickering of lovers.
Alistair froze. His typically cold, austere features softened at her words. His eyes locked onto her, a momentary look of sheer bewilderment crossing his face.
A second later, Celia heard a low, entirely unrepentant chuckle rumble in his chest.
"For that, I apologize as well."
He didn't mind playing along to pacify her; admitting a little extra fault to soothe what was essentially a child's tantrum meant nothing to him.
...
Meanwhile, just outside the estate gates.
Ken's face was a mask of cold authority as he blocked Jessica from re-entering.
"Dr. Johnson, Mr. Zucker made himself perfectly clear," Ken said, his voice completely devoid of sympathy. "If you want any hope of maintaining a career elsewhere, you should walk away right now."
She was finished in the Capital. Both Ken and Jessica knew it.
"Ken, you've worked for Mr. Zucker for years! Don't you think there's something incredibly suspicious about that girl?!"
Jessica glared at him, practically manic as she screamed her accusations.
A flash of intense irritation crossed Ken's eyes.
He had misunderstood Ms. Stafford once before, and he had carried the guilt of that ever since.
