Sudden, emergency meetings were a daily occurrence for Ken. When his phone vibrated, he spared a quick glance at the screen.
Immediately declining the call, he typed out a brief text.
[Ms. Stafford, we are in a meeting. Please wait.]
Celia: [Okay, I'll just wait in the lobby lounge downstairs. Take your time.]
Ken didn't reply, diving straight back into his work.
The afternoon was insanely hectic.
Through a grueling gauntlet of classified and emergency meetings, Ken hadn't even had the chance to take a sip of water.
He noticed his boss was in a foul mood, though he wasn't sure if it was due to the overwhelming workload or something else entirely.
It wasn't until nine o'clock at night that the final meeting concluded, finally giving Ken a moment to breathe.
"Mr. Zucker," Ken said, placing the finalized minutes on the desk. "It's time to head back."
"Mhm."
Stepping out of the office, Alistair took his private elevator down to the ground floor.
Ken couldn't shake the feeling that he had forgotten something, but so much had happened today his brain was completely fried.
Whatever. If he couldn't remember, it probably wasn't important.
*Ding—*
The elevator arrived at the lobby.
Outside, the city was bathed in neon lights. The early spring air still carried a biting chill, and Ken couldn't help but shiver as he stepped out behind Alistair.
As they walked toward the exit, right before Alistair could step through the doors, a clear, sweet voice called out from the lounge area: "Uncle Alistair?"
The man's long, tailored legs stopped instantly.
In a flash of lightning, Ken finally remembered what he had forgotten! His eyes widened as he snapped his head toward the voice.
The young woman stood there with bright, clear eyes, wearing nothing but a flimsy dress, her long hair cascading down her back.
He had forgotten to give her the coffee! Did that mean she had been waiting here from noon all the way until now?
Ken's stomach dropped with guilt.
Alistair had clearly come to the exact same realization. His brow furrowed slightly as he shot a chilling sideways glance at Ken.
