"Jacob, is there some kind of... misunderstanding between us?"
Celia kept her voice soft, acting as if she were terrified of embarrassing him in front of such a huge crowd.
But Jacob completely missed the point. He looked at her with what he clearly thought was intense sincerity. "Celia, I know you're the heiress to the Stafford Group, but please believe me. I like you for who you are, not for your background."
"I know... you have feelings for me too."
"We've graduated now. I figured if I didn't confess now, I'd never get the chance." Pausing, he pushed the bouquet closer to her, his voice booming. "Celia, will you be my girlfriend?!"
The crowd immediately started chanting.
"Say yes! Say yes!"
"Kiss! Kiss!"
The young woman's eyes grew red, her lip trembling as if overwhelmed by the pressure. "Jacob, I know you're a good person, but I—"
"Ms. Stafford, I had no idea you were so popular!"
Before Celia could finish, a mocking voice sliced through the crowd.
Evelyn pushed her way to the front row. "I never expected someone to confess to you right at graduation."
Because the university had stripped her of her valedictorian status, Evelyn blamed the entire humiliation squarely on Celia.
Hearing that someone was publicly confessing to Celia, she had dragged Talbot—who had come to attend her graduation—straight over.
"Look," Evelyn said, pulling Talbot to the front. She linked her arm through his, faking a look of pleasant surprise. "Ms. Stafford is incredibly popular! Someone is actually giving her this heartfelt confession!"
Celia threw a panicked look at Talbot, scrambling to explain. "No, Talbot, listen to me—"
"Someone like her, if she had any self-awareness, wouldn't go around stringing people along," Talbot sneered, his eyes icy.
His knuckles turned white as he delivered his venomous verdict. "She's only fit to be a desperate follower. She doesn't deserve to be liked by anyone."
