Garnett had just seen out his last round of guests after discussing a project when Larkin Locke stepped into his office. "Mr. Harper, Lucian Roche is here to see you. He's been waiting for a while."

Garnett frowned at the mere mention of the name. "What does he want?" A second later, he guessed the likely reason.

"Mr. Harper, if you'd rather not see him, I can tell him you're busy."

"Can I afford not to? He's a major shareholder," Garnett sighed. "Send Mr. Roche in. And use the premium beans for his coffee."

A moment later, Lucian Roche walked in with effortless grace. Garnett stood up, matching his sophisticated demeanor as they shook hands. "Mr. Roche, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit during such a busy schedule?"

"You're too kind," Lucian smiled warmly, as if there wasn't an ounce of bad blood between them. "I assume you've already guessed why I'm here. I am acting on Mr. Sheffield's behalf."

"This is about the divorce proceedings with Lavinia, I assume?" Garnett sat back, crossing his legs with affected ease.

"It's refreshing to speak with someone so astute. No need to mince words," Lucian chuckled. "Last time, I was bested. Thankfully, Mr. Sheffield is magnanimous and didn't hold it against me. But this time, I cannot afford to give you any leeway."

"Is Charley Sheffield starved for female attention? Why is he so obsessed with my wife?" Garnett arched an eyebrow.

"Mr. Harper, I will answer that with absolute sincerity." Lucian's smile faded. "Mr. Sheffield knew Ms. Joplin long before you did. He is not the interloper here."

He paused. "As a major shareholder of the Harper Group, I strongly advise you to drop this lawsuit. If you insist on dragging this out, I will call an emergency shareholder meeting and push for an election of a new chairman. And I assure you, my vote will go to your father."

Garnett's fingers curled into a tight fist.

Lucian stood up. "I've said my piece. You are an exceptional businessman, Mr. Harper. I trust you'll make the right call."

Shortly after Lucian left, the phone rang again. It was his lawyer, Heath Kenyon.

"Mr. Harper, the hearing is in two days. Honestly, we have no chance of winning this. I strongly suggest you reach out to Ms. Joplin again. Agree to an uncontested divorce, offer her a substantial settlement, and convince her to drop the suit. You're a public figure; going to court is going to look terrible for both you and the Harper Group."

Garnett stayed quiet for a moment. "Even if I offered all that now, she wouldn't withdraw the suit. Asking her to wait another thirty days... even if she agreed, Charley Sheffield wouldn't."
