Charley froze, his brain stalling for a second before he processed what she was asking. He quickly shucked off his suit jacket and handed it to her.
She took it and buried her nose in the fabric, taking a deep breath. The woody fragrance clinging to the material instantly soothed her stomach, easing her nausea.
Watching the woman he loved greedily inhaling his scent while hugging his clothes sparked an unprecedented storm inside him. A hundred thousand atoms exploded like fireworks inside him.
After breathing in his scent for a while, Lavinia felt much better. She peeked up at him, asking sheepishly, "Am I being weird?"
Her eyelashes were damp, her eyes wide and round like a pathetic little puppy's.
Charley's Adam's apple bobbed hard.
He pulled back the blanket, lay down beside her, and gently pressed her head against his chest, softly stroking her fragile spine.
"Go to sleep. I'm right here with you."
The woody scent was even stronger on his shirt; Lavinia seriously suspected he was made of timber.
Unsure of what to do with her hands, she rested one on his waist. Even through the thin fabric, her palm could feel the coiled strength in his lean muscles.
She didn't overthink it. She just felt profoundly safe.
He rested his chin on the top of her head, the soft fragrance of her hair lulling him into a drowsy state.
Without realizing it, both of them drifted off.
Just as his consciousness was slipping fully into the dark, Charley's eyes snapped open.
He looked down. Lavinia was fast asleep, her breathing light and even.
He carefully lifted his hand from her back, gently removed her small hand from his waist, and rose in slow motion. When he reached the door, he looked back, pulled out his phone, and snapped a picture of her peaceful sleeping face.
Out in the main cabin, Lucian and Zoey were chatting. Zoey had said something that managed to coax the rare laugh lines out of the usually stoic Lucian.
Seeing Charley emerge, they both clamped their mouths shut.
Acting as though nothing had happened, he sat down. "I gave her the medicine, and she's asleep. We have a lot to deal with when we get back. Let's use these next few hours to strategize."
Lucian and Zoey exchanged a loaded look, hesitating.
"What is it?"
"Um, boss," Zoey ventured carefully. "We're landing in an hour."
