The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 386

Julian turned his gaze back to Garnett, sporting the kind of icy smile reserved for ruthless boardroom negotiations.

"Garnett, every single thing that belongs to the Gilmores is going to be taken back, piece by piece. If the Harpers refuse to hand it over, I'll make sure they vomit it all up with interest."

Garnett stood there, his face ashen.

Lavinia said, "Julian, I've lost my appetite for touring. Let's come back another time."

Julian nodded. The siblings walked straight out without giving Garnett another glance.

Just as they reached the entrance of the main hall, a commotion erupted in the front courtyard.

The court officials were trying to block the entryway, but a woman forcefully shoved her way through. Her hair was a mess, her eyes red and swollen, and her voice was entirely hoarse.

"Get out of the way! This is my house! You have no right to stop me!" Sigrid stormed into the courtyard. When she saw Lavinia, she completely lost her mind.

"Lavinia! Who gave you the right to seize my house?! This has been passed down through my family for generations!" She pointed frantically at the plaque above the door. "My ancestor was an imperial scholar from the old dynasty! That plaque says 'The Scholarly Heritage Plaque'! Can you even read?!"

Garnett walked out of the east wing and stood beneath the corridor, his eyes dark and unreadable as he looked at Sigrid.

Lavinia didn't back down. She replied coolly, "Ms. Sloan, this house didn't start out belonging to the Sloans."

The courtyard fell dead silent. Sigrid's hand remained frozen in mid-air, but she looked as though she had been struck over the head with a club.

Lavinia continued at a leisurely pace. "Centuries ago, a wealthy merchant built this estate. The merchant favored his mistress, so he kicked his actual wife and legitimate son out onto the streets, giving all his wealth to the mistress and her child. Within a decade, the fortune was squandered, and the house was sold off."

"Later, a local magistrate bought it. Two generations down the line, his grandson also developed a habit of favoring mistresses, all while addicted to gambling and terrible habits. His massive fortune couldn't plug the holes of his addictions. Utterly destitute, he was forced to sell the estate for pennies to your ancestors."

Lavinia paused, locking eyes with Sigrid. "The merchant's mistress, the magistrate's mistress—they were both mistresses. When they were brought into this house, they probably thought they had won, too. But what happened? Every single time this house changed hands, it was for the exact same reason."

Her gaze drifted past Sigrid and landed squarely on Garnett standing in the corridor. She articulated every word with lethal precision. "He who wrongs his wife will see no wealth."

Garnett's eyes darkened, his fingers twitching.
