"Sure," Lavinia nodded.
As soon as Ethan left, Zoey pulled a paper bag from behind her back.
She held it out to Lavinia. "Lavinia, Mr. Sheffield made this breakfast for you. He says he's sorry."
Zoey paused, frowning slightly. "Mr. Sheffield didn't mean to lie to you. He has his reasons."
Lavinia turned around, neither taking the bag nor replying.
She walked back to her desk and opened her laptop. Zoey followed, sat next to her, and lowered her voice.
"Mr. Sheffield's family situation is incredibly complicated. It's a cutthroat environment, and he was terrified that dragging you into it too early would put you in danger. Plus, a lot of what he does involves highly classified state secrets. He literally isn't allowed to talk about it without official clearance."
Staring at her screen, Lavinia ignored the paper bag Zoey pushed toward her.
"Did he send you here to spy on me?"
"No, no!" Zoey quickly waved her hands. "It's because of Garnett. He's acting unhinged. Mr. Sheffield is worried he might try to hurt you again, so he assigned me to stick by you and keep you safe."
Lavinia wanted to snap that she didn't need their protection, but considering what Garnett had done, she didn't exactly have the confidence to turn away a bodyguard.
"I already ate. You can have it." Lavinia slid the bag back. Her tone was softer, though still distant.
Not knowing what else to do, Zoey said cheerfully, "I'll be sitting right behind you. If you need anything at all, just holler!"
She headed to the empty desk in the row behind her.
Lavinia frowned slightly. So "Mr. Sheffield" was Charley. But he was barely older than Zoey.
When they went to India for the medicine, Zoey had been their local guide. When they returned from Stanton City, Zoey had been the driver.
