Garnett's expression shifted, suddenly on high alert.
Looking at his face, Lavinia suddenly realized something.
Was someone coming to save her? Saul, or Charley?
She turned to open the door, but Garnett grabbed her wrist in a vice grip.
"Let go!" Lavinia shrieked.
He refused. As they struggled, Garnett's phone rang.
A video call request popped up on the screen. The caller ID read: Sigrid Sloan.
Lavinia glanced at the screen, then at Garnett.
He froze for a second. "I definitely deleted her number."
Keeping a tight grip on Lavinia's wrist with one hand, he swiped to answer with the other.
The screen showed the rooftop of an abandoned, unfinished building. More than half of Sigrid's body was dangling off the edge, suspended only by a rope tied around her waist. The other end of the rope was held by someone off-camera. Her hair whipped wildly in the wind, and her face was streaked with tears.
"Garnett! Save me! Help!" Her sharp, hoarse screams blasted from the phone's speaker.
Garnett's face darkened completely.
Startled, Lavinia instinctively took a step forward.
On the screen, the rope suddenly gave way a bit. Sigrid dropped a few inches, and her piercing shriek tore through the living room.
"Tell him to open the door," a voice said from off-camera. It was a woman, her tone icy.
Lavinia blinked. That voice sounded oddly familiar. It sounded like Zoey Wallace.
Clinging to the edge of the roof, Sigrid screamed like a madwoman, "Garnett! Open the door! Open it now!"
Garnett gripped the phone tightly, his voice squeezing through gritted teeth. "Don't do anything crazy. I'm going to open it right now."
He hurried downstairs, and Lavinia followed closely behind.
Reaching the front doors, Garnett yanked them open.
Standing outside was Lucian Roche. Behind him, a row of men in black suits blocked the entrance completely.
"I knew it was you," Garnett said menacingly.
