Chapter 167
“okay so let’s start with what happened” I say softly.
“well after Dom left to meet with you I decided to just go to sleep and then I thought I woke up but I was in my old pack in her room sitting in her bed in pajamas and so was Iris but we were aware of where we were and who’s room we were in Winter says.
“then Lyric came out of the bathroom heavily pregnant in a night gown and she looked just as bad as us” Iris says
My grip tightens around the glass without me realizing it. Pregnant. Tired. Not okay. And I’m not there.
“So she pulled you into a dream?, how if the witch said her powers are unstable” Hunter asks quickly.
Iris shakes her head “That’s the thing I don’t think she was expecting us to not be dream versions of ourselves, I don’t even think
she realized what she did” Winter says.
“but why dream of you and not me?” I say before I can stop it. It comes out sharper than I meant, too raw, too close to what I’ve
been holding in. hurt and happy that she saw someone but I needed it to be me.
Winter practically breaks at my question and I feel bad for saying it but I don’t, that’s my mate. That thought doesn’t soften, it
hardens. Mine. Still mine. Even like this. She shakes her head violently
“I don’t think she was dreaming of me necessarily, I think she was dreaming of a time when life was simple for her, before Mason
turned 18 and before you and all of this, there was only me and her in that room” Winter says tears falling freely voice cracking.
“at one point I was her only safe space. There were no mates or politics or anything it was just us and a dream” she damn near
screams at me.
That hits. Harder than it should. Because I can’t argue it.
“Win I didn’t mean it like that” I say softly. My voice doesn’t carry the authority it usually does. It doesn’t command anything. Not
even this room.
“Well that’s how it came off, like you are the only one that matters. I was here first before you, before Mason, before Hunter, before
anyone actually gave a fuck about her so excuse me Alpha if she had a dream about her sister’s and not her precious mate” she says
standing and storming out.
The word mate lands heavier than everything else. Not wrong, just not enough. Not right now.
Dom stands “I’m just going to make sure she is okay and then I am coming back… Alpha” he says
I wave my hand at him “Go check on your mate Dominic” I say defeated. The word Alpha feels hollow in my mouth. Like a title I’m wearing instead of something I am.
When he walks out the door Iris speaks first “Okay your delivery may have been terrible but I get the question” she says

Chapter 167
I don’t respond. Because she’s right. And that doesn’t help.
“if I may speak freely Cole” Hunter says.

“we are family and this isn’t a formal meeting speak your mind Hunter” I say. My tone steadies, but Zeus is still there pressed up
against the surface, listening.
“even though you are her mate and she loves you her subconscious mind is categorizing you kind of the same way it does Mason but not to the same extreme” he says and Zeus growls low in warning.
That growl doesn’t stay inside, it presses against my ribs like it wants out.
“wait just hear me out for a moment before you rip my head off” he says backing up.
“Lyric rejected Mason because everything associated with him her whole life led to her being abused in some way by Summer” he
says.
“Make your point faster Hunter” I grit out holding onto control of Zeus by a thread, being compared to Mason set him off. Even hearing his name in the same breath is enough to push Zeus forward.
“Okay and since you and her mated someone has been trying to hurt her and then she is kidnapped by your cousin who is hurting
her” he says
–and that stops Zeus and I both cold.
Everything in me just… stops. Not anger. Not rage. Something heavier. Something worse.
He howls in my mind.
“y-you are right” I say choked the weight of that realization settling heavy in my chest. Not settling…sinking. Like something I
can’t push back up.
