Chapter 168

Zeus forces the shift and I give him control.

I told her I would never let another person hurt her.

I told her I would keep her safe.

I failed her.

I failed them.

That word sits there-failed-and it doesn’t move. It doesn’t ease. It stays.

“NO” Zeus roars at me

B

“Mate loves us and she is waiting for us to rescue her, she is ours and we will kill everyone responsible for taking her from us” he

snarls before giving me back control and retreating.

He retreats, but not far. He’s still there. Watching. Waiting for me to fix what I let happen.

When I stop and look around I’m at the border. I run the border before I find myself at the runes. I smell them before I even catch

sight of the bastards-rank rogue stench cutting through the night air. It hits thick and putrid, sharp in my nose, and Zeus goes still -not calm… hunting. A deep growl rumbles from my chest, low and warning, vibrating through my wolf frame.

Three of them slink out from the shadows, hackles bristled high, fangs gleaming yellow under the moonlight. They crave blood, a

fight to the death. Fuck it, I’ve been itching to unleash, to feel bones crunch under my jaws. My body leans into it before I even

think.

The biggest brute lunges first, massive paws pounding the earth as he barrels straight at me. I track the other two flanking from the

sides, eyes locked, and lash out with my paw-claws raking deep gashes across his snarling muzzle. He shakes it off and snaps for

my throat, jaws wide. I twist aside at the last second, countering with my own bite, teeth sinking into the thick meat of his neck.

Warm blood floods my mouth instantly-metallic, thick-and it pushes Zeus forward harder.

He yelps, thrashing, and swipes desperately at my underbelly, claws grazing fur but not piercing. That’s when the second rogue

clamps down on my flank-pain explodes like fire, forcing my jaws to release the leader. The pain hits sharp and hot, but it doesn’t

slow me, it clears everything.

I whirl fast, muscles coiling like springs, and slam my paw into the flank-biter’s throat, Claws tear through flesh and windpipe; arterial spray erupts in a crimson arc, soaking the ground. He gurgles, legs buckling, collapsing in a twitching heap, still breathing shallow, but done for.

“Kill them and stop playing, Zeus roars im my head, his command slamming into my skull like thunder.

I shove it aside, zeroing in on the two left standing. The leader charges again, blind rage propelling him forward. I meet him head-

on, paw slashing across his face-claws gouge out one eye, blood and flesh oozing down his fur He stumbles and I feel the shift in him, rage breaking into panic.

The last one edges back, tail tucking, eyes wide with panic. I bare my teeth in a feral grin. “You dare invade my pack lands and then try to flee?’ I link him, my Alpha voice booming in his mind, inescapable for any wolf under my domain.

He whimpers, scrambling until his ass hits a tree trunk, nowhere left to run. I launch myself at him, paws pinning his shoulders as my jaws crush his neck, bones snap like dry twigs under the pressure. The break is instant. Final. No coming back from that.

The leader lets out a broken whine, probably kin to the dead one. He rushes me one final time, a suicide charge. No more games. 1 sidestep, seize his throat in my vise grip, and clamp down with everything I’ve got. Flesh rips, bone grinds, crunch, the sickening crack echoes as his spine severs. His massive body slumps limp beneath my paws, eyes glazing over in death. Silence hits hard ager,

too fast, too empty.

Before I can shift back a man comes from behind the tree.

“Hello Cole” he says as if he has known me his entire life. And something about the way he says it makes Zeus go still instead of

strike, and that’s worse than any attack.
