We reach the border and shift back when we walk outside of the gates she shows herself. She bows low “My King” she says

“Seraphina you don’t have to bow” I say.

She shakes her head, “you are the King and I am a lowly subject” she says head bowed.

“as long as you are helping my mate you are not a lowly subject” I say.

“how is she?” I ask Zeus pushing forward not wanting to miss a thing. The question comes out tighter than I want it to-like I’m

bracing for something I don’t want to hear.

She smiles softly “she is doing okay, she faked passing out to keep David from touching her until after the birth so we need to

move, she said we have days before the pups come” she says.

My jaw locks instantly. She had to fake weakness just to protect herself. Just to survive.

“there is a tunnel that David built for easy an easy escape if the settlement was ever attacked that we plan to use to get her out”

she adds

“okay so I need to attack the bear King as soon as possible, I need him out of the equation before we attack the settlement” I say.

She shakes her head. “you can’t attack, most of the wolves there do not agree with David” she says.

“Look if you don’t want someone hurt then in four days when we move on the settlement, they need to be through that tunnel or

somewhere safe because I’m burning everything around him to the ground” I snarl. No hesitation. No room to argue.

She whimpers and bares her neck “yes my King” she says softly.

Hunter walks closer to her “Are you sure she is okay though?” he asks voice cracking

“she is okay, she is a bit weak from lack of food but her wolf is back and her magic although unstable is also back” she says.

Weak. That word lands heavier than anything else.

“she is planning her own escape and she is trying to keep my mate alive” she says.

“who is your mate?” I ask

“his name is Jonathan and he is David’s Beta but he has been helping her from the moment she arrived and David is getting

suspicious of him” she says

“he’s been watching him more closely and tracking his movements” she adds.

Chapter 166

“Seraphina if your mate is helping my mate I will try to help him but I need you to know I am going to kill your mother” I say!”

“I’m waiting for a witch to get here to help me with destabilizing her giving us enough time to move” I say.

“I understand my King” she says head bowed.

“I must take my leave, the guards are switching shifts soon and I need to be back to remain unseen, because David thinks I am dead” she says.

“well go, we probably won’t be able to meet again, tell Lyric 4 days and she will be in my arms agam. This all must happen at night”

I say. Four days feels too long and not enough at the same time.

“I agree and okay I will and I know timing is everything right now” she says.

“yes it is, now go” I say and she pulls her hood over her head and disappears back into the night.

“That is so cool” Hunter and Dom both say.

“grow up, let’s go back to my office and talk, we need to talk about Mason, Hunter” I say shifting into Zeus and running back to the

palace.

When we get back to the palace Winter is waiting outside with Iris and they both look like hollow versions of themselves. Not tired,

drained. Like something took from them and didn’t give it back. Dom runs straight to Winter the moment the shift is complete and

Hunter to Iris. They don’t hesitate. I do. That split second sits wrong in my chest.

“what’s going on girls?” I ask.

“we had a weird dream but we don’t think it was a dream” Winter says. Her voice is thin like she’s still halfway in it.

“Let’s go to my office, Iris where is Eli?” I ask.

“He’s on patrol, he’s been doing patrols himself more often since the coronation” she says softly. Avoiding my eyes. That doesn’t go

unnoticed.

When we reach the office I link Mary to bring tea and food for the girls and I pour us a drink. My hand is steady. It shouldn’t be. I hand Dom and Hunter their cup before grabbing mine and lean against my desk. I need something solid at my back.
