Riley stiffened instantly. She immediately locked her phone and turned around. Standing behind her was a woman in a hospital gown, likely a patient from this floor. She couldn't afford to get tangled up with her here; if she alerted Pierce inside, it would ruin everything.
In a split second, a plan formed in her mind.
Riley pulled the woman a few steps away before speaking. "The patient in that room is my friend. She got depressed and cut her wrists. She's incredibly sensitive right now, so I don't dare go in. I can only check on her secretly from out here."
The woman believed her immediately and sighed. "Why would she do something so foolish? What could possibly be more important than life itself?"
Riley nodded in solemn agreement. "Ma'am, please don't let her know I was here. I'm terrified of triggering her again."
The woman quickly waved her hand. "I won't say a word. My lips are sealed."
"Thank you. I should go before she notices." With that, Riley walked away briskly.
She returned to her room and sent the video to Quinn.
Quinn replied that with the kissing and the in-bed video, proving Pierce's infidelity would be a breeze. But if they could get their hands on some flirty text messages, it would be an absolute slam dunk.
The following afternoon, Riley was discharged, and she and Pierce flew back to Riverport together. As for how he had arranged things for Seraphina, she didn't know, nor did she care.
Over the next few days, Pierce claimed he had fallen behind on work due to his trip to Statenbury. He started leaving early and coming home late, often not returning at all for the night.
Riley knew he was most likely spending his nights with Seraphina.
Perhaps feeling guilty for neglecting her so much, after a few days of indulging himself, he finally came home straight after work.
Capitalizing on his rare presence, Riley waited until he was in the shower to access his phone. She took screenshots of his chat history with Seraphina, sent them to her own phone, deleted the evidence from his device, and put it exactly back where she found it. She then slipped out of the master bedroom and into her daughter's nursery.
Riley had just leaned against the headboard and opened a medical textbook when Pierce walked in.
He was wearing deep blue silk pajamas. His freshly dried hair fell across his forehead in a messy, casual fringe, making him look significantly younger than his usual slicked-back corporate style.
For a moment, Riley felt as if she were looking at the spirited college student he used to be. It wasn't until the crisp scent of his body wash hit her senses that she realized Pierce had pulled back the covers and was getting into bed.
She immediately dropped her book and pinned the blanket down. "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to sleep in here with you and Lory."
