Riley went straight to Landon Enterprises, only to find an empty office. The receptionist informed her that Pierce and Scott had gone out for a business meeting and it was unclear when they would return.
She called Pierce's phone, but he didn't answer. She texted him, asking when he'd be back at the office, but he didn't reply to that, either.
He didn't come home that night. It was blatantly obvious he was deliberately avoiding her.
He was trying to ice her out, hoping to make her panic.
The following day, Riley went back to the company, but she still couldn't find him.
Since that was how he wanted to play it, she would just have to corner him at the main house.
Sebastian had been in Riverport for a while now. Ever since he arrived, as long as Pierce wasn't working late, he would always go to the main house for dinner. Riley hated pretending in front of him, so aside from the obligatory weekend visits, she hadn't been going.
At five-thirty, Riley arrived at the main house. The living room was empty except for Beatrice, which meant Pierce hadn't arrived yet.
Beatrice scowled at Riley. "It's not the weekend. What are you doing here?"
"Waiting for Pierce." Riley found a seat and pulled out her phone to read.
Seeing that Riley was completely ignoring her, Beatrice bristled with anger. "What are you waiting for him for? The cooling-off period ends in a few days. Don't tell me you're having second thoughts and want to cling to Pierce again."
Riley was scrolling through her hospital's group chat. Tomorrow was exam day, and the chat was exceptionally lively as everyone discussed the upcoming test.
Riley's thesis had passed, and the crucial SCI publication requirement was out of the way. All that was left was tomorrow's exam. If she passed, she would officially be promoted to attending physician. She had studied so hard for this; she was confident she would do fine.
Someone tagged her in the group, reminding her about the exam.
Just as she was about to type a reply, she heard Beatrice's voice. Riley shot her a mocking look. "The only one having second thoughts is your son, not me."
"Nonsense." Beatrice looked as if she had just heard a hilarious joke, her face dripping with disdain. "Why would my son ever regret anything? A woman like you... all he has to do is snap his fingers..."
Before she could finish, there was movement at the door, and Beatrice immediately clamped her mouth shut.
