Riley gave a weak nod. "I was probably just too excited last night and couldn't sleep. I just feel a bit drained."
"Do you want me to call the family doctor over?"
"No, I'm fine. We finally get to go on a trip together; I don't want to ruin it by calling a doctor."
Seeing how much she valued their getaway, Pierce's eyes softened with affection. He resolved right then to spend more time with her. "Alright, but if you start feeling worse, you have to tell me immediately."
"I will." Riley looked down at her oatmeal, a cunning gleam flashing in her eyes.
By planting the seed now, her "collapse" later wouldn't seem suspicious.
After breakfast, just as they were about to leave the house, Riley received a text from Quinn: [Seraphina bought a ticket on a flight to Statenbury that leaves an hour after yours. Everything is going perfectly.]
Riley walked out the door feeling invincible.
They flew to Statenbury, landing at the international airport by 11:00 AM. It was 12:30 PM by the time they reached Cloudcrest Manor.
As Riley stepped out of the car, she staggered slightly, pretending to lose her footing.
Pierce caught her instantly, his brow furrowing with worry. "You look terrible. How are you supposed to enjoy the trip like this? I'm taking you to a hospital right now."
"No, it's okay. I think I'm just hungry. I'll feel better once I eat something."
Pierce remembered she had only eaten half a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. Assuming her weakness was just low blood sugar, he agreed. "Okay, let's head to the restaurant first."
"Okay."
Riley was actually starving. Since Seraphina wouldn't arrive for another hour, she figured she could fuel up before making her grand exit.
During the meal, Pierce noticed Riley putting her fork down after only a few bites. "I thought you were starving. Why did you barely eat?"
"The car ride probably killed my appetite. You go ahead. I'll wait for you."
She was about to fake a medical emergency. She couldn't stuff her face, or it would ruin the illusion of being a frail patient. She would just grab a snack later once she was safely checked into the hospital.
Seeing her looking so weak, Pierce lost his appetite as well. He set down his fork. "I really think I should take you to a doctor."
