It was just anemia, nothing life-threatening. Pierce felt his tense muscles finally relax. It seemed her body still hadn't fully recovered from the massive hemorrhage during childbirth.

Pierce walked into the hospital room and sat on the edge of the bed. He took Riley's hand, his eyes brimming with guilt and self-blame. "This is my fault. Your body hasn't fully healed yet. I shouldn't have brought you all the way out here."

Riley offered a weak smile. "Don't blame yourself. I was the one who wanted to come."

Her words only made his guilt worse. He felt terrible that his lack of attention had made her so desperate for a trip together that she ignored her own health to come along.

He looked at her, his heart aching. "I promise I'll spend more time with you from now on."

Hearing him talk like this made Riley genuinely anxious. If he kept this up, he was going to stay glued to her side and completely ignore Seraphina.

Then all her scheming would have been for nothing.

"I'm fine, really. Please don't beat yourself up over this. A little rest and I'll be back to normal. You should head back to the resort. Hanging around a hospital is depressing."

Pierce frowned at her. "What are you talking about? You're sick. I'm staying right here with you. I'm not going back to any resort."

"I don't need you to watch over me..."

"That's enough. Close your eyes and rest." Pierce cut her off, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I am staying right here. I'm not going anywhere."

Riley was speechless.
