Riley gave a curt nod and turned back to Pierce. "You guys get back to work. I won't bother you." She tried to walk away, but Pierce kept a firm grip on her hand. "What is it?"
Pierce studied her face, desperate to find some crack in her composure.
Back at Aegis General Hospital, seeing him and Seraphina together had sent her into such a rage that she had suffered a severe hemorrhage.
At The Sovereign Club, catching them in the same private room had made her storm out instantly.
And the time he got into a fight defending Seraphina, Riley had cried hysterically, screamed at him, and demanded he never see Seraphina again.
But now...
She had just caught them walking out of his private lounge together, and she was completely unbothered. No screaming, no crying. She was even volunteering to leave.
This mature, understanding version of her was exactly what he had wanted. So why did it make him feel so incredibly anxious?
He squeezed her hand affectionately, his voice soft. "Are you sure you don't want to stay and eat with me?"
Riley ignored the pleading look in his eyes. "I already ate."
"Then I'll come home early tonight so we can have dinner together."
"Okay."
Pierce finally let go. Watching her walk out the door without looking back once, he felt an inexplicable hollow ache in his chest.
Seraphina tested the waters. "Do you want me to stay and eat with you?"
Pierce tore his eyes away from the door and looked at her. "Have the previous project manager take over the joint venture between our companies. Don't come to the office looking for me anymore."
Seraphina looked outraged. "Why? Because Riley saw us walking out of the lounge? But she didn't find anything, and she wasn't even mad!"
