The CEO’s Unspoken Love (Eleanor and Derek) novel Chapter 227

Chapter 227

Eleanor POV

Derek’s eyes captured the starlight as he was facing me, his expression more open and vulnerable than I’d ever seen it. My breath caught in my throat. Something significant was happening-I could feel it in the electric tension between us, in the slight tremor of his hand as it held mine.

“Eleanor, he began, his voice lower than usual, rough with emotion.

The campfire crackled behind us, sending shadows dancing across his features. In that moment, I was acutely aware of every detail -the pine-scented air, the distant hooting of an owl, the warmth of Derek’s palm against mine. Time seemed to slow, each second stretching into eternity.

“From the beginning,” he continued, “we did everything backward. Our marriage came before love. Commitment before understanding. We were strangers sharing a home, trapped in a contract neither of us truly wanted.”

I swallowed hard, memories flooding back-the cold ceremony, the emptiness of our early days together, the painful distance he’d maintained. But also the gradual thawing, the unexpected moments of connection, and finally, the accident that had changed everything.

“I was a coward, Derek said, his eyes never leaving mine. “I ran away to London rather than face what was happening between us. I convinced myself our marriage was just an obligation to be endured.”

The stars above us seemed to multiply, the heavens expanding with impossible brilliance. I remained silent, sensing he needed to speak these words that had been long held back.

“When I woke up in that hospital bed and saw you there-exhausted, determined, refusing to give up on me even after everything I’d done-I knew. His voice broke slightly. “I knew I’d been given a second chance I didn’t deserve.”

A lump formed in my throat as I remembered those endless days and nights by his bedside, the overwhelming fear of losing him forever, the moment his fingers had first moved in mine after weeks of stillness.

“These past months with you have been the happiest of my life, Derek continued. “Not despite my recovery, but because of it.

“I know I hurt you,” he whispered. I know I wasted so much time. But if you’ll let me, I’ll spend every day making it up to you.

The diamond caught the moonlight, sending prisms of light dancing between us. This ring wasn’t just jewelry-it was a promise, a declaration, a beginning.

“Yes,” I finally managed, my voice breaking on the simple word. “Yes, Derek.”

His smile was radiant, transforming his face with a joy so pure it took my breath away. He slid the ring onto my finger-a peffect fit -then pulled me into his arms, his lips finding mine with an intensity that spoke of relief and promise and devotion.

When we finally parted, both breathless, Derek rested his forehead against mine. I was so nervous,” he admitted with a soft laugh.

I practiced in the bathroom mirror like a teenager.
