Chapter 234
“Your wife, I repeated, loving the sound of it. ‘It feels different this time.”
“Everything is different this time, Derek agreed, his hands warm on my waist. “This time, I know exactly what I have. Who I have.”
The music from the reception drifted to us on the night air, a slow, sweet melody that invited closeness. Derek began to sway gently, leading me in a private dance beneath the stars.
“I love you, Eleanor Wells,” he said, bending to kiss me.
The words, once so impossible to imagine hearing from him, now filled me with a warmth that spread from my heart to my fingertips. “I love you, Derek Wells,” I replied, my voice soft in the darkness.
Suddenly, a wave of nausea swept over me, unexpected and intense. I pulled away, my hand flying to my mouth. I turned abruptly,
bending slightly as if in pain, willing the feeling to pass.
“Eleanor? Derek gripped my shoulders, alarm evident in his voice. “What’s wrong?”
The nausea receded as quickly as it had come, leaving me slightly dizzy but otherwise fine. I straightened slowly, my face probably pale in the moonlight. “Nothing, I think. Just suddenly felt a bit sick. Probably just the excitement-
Derek studied me with an odd expression, his brow furrowed in thought. “You know, Daniel was telling me earlier that Melissa has been dealing with similar symptoms. Morning sickness, he called it, though he said it can happen anytime of day.”
My heart skipped a beat as I processed his words. “Morning sickness?”
Derek’s eyes softened as he looked at me. “He mentioned that she’s been extra tired lately. And that certain smells have been making her nauseated. He paused, watching my face carefully. “Like the coffee you couldn’t stand last week.”
